Supporting the role of cooperatives in promoting decent working conditions in Jordan’s agricultural sector

The ILO held a workshop in Amman on Tuesday (February 19) to discuss the role of agricultural cooperatives in promoting decent work in Jordan’s agricultural sector. 

 

The workshop was led by Maha Kattaa, ILO Regional Resilience and Crisis Response specialist and coordinator of the ILO’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan. It was attended by Awni Al Shdeifat, Director of Mafraq’s Governorate Directorate of Agriculture as well as tripartite representatives from targeted governorates. 

 

Participants spoke about the challenges faced by the sector and some of the interventions needed to address decent work deficits in agriculture while also increasing productivity and reaching foreign markets. 

 

Employers and workers shared their first-hand experience in working in the sector, highlighting challenges and opportunities faced.

 

The workshop concluded with a number of recommendations and many stressed the important role cooperatives play in supporting workers and their employers, while improving working conditions, promoting decent work and increasing productivity.
